Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy

Parul University has adopted a policy-driven approach to sustainable development by establishing direct, collaborative relationships with regional, state, and national-level government departments, as well as non-governmental organisations (NGOs) actively engaged in SDG policy formulation, implementation, and monitoring . Through these alliances, the University contributes expert knowledge, research data, and institutional capacity to inform policy frameworks addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably those related to quality education, health, gender equality, clean energy, and sustainable communities.

Parul University maintained formal partnerships with over 50 government and non-governmental organisations, guided by Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that ensure structured collaboration in identifying regional challenges, developing adaptive strategies, and evaluating impact outcomes. These include strategic partnerships with the Lions Club of Vishwamitri, Vadodara Mahanagar Palika, Hospital for Mental Health Karelibaug, Don Bosco Snehalaya, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Zydus Hospital, Rotary Club of Vadodara, National Service Scheme (NSS), and National Cadet Corps (NCC). Each of these collaborations has contributed directly to local and regional policy interventions aligned with multiple SDGs.

Through its Social Responsive Cell (SRC), Institution’s Innovation Council, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA), and IQAC, Parul University has contributed to policy consultation and ground-level implementation mechanisms that align with national frameworks such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, National Innovation and Start-up Policy (NISP), and Swachh Bharat Mission. Faculty experts and researchers from engineering, management, social work, and public health disciplines have provided technical and research-based input to these bodies in areas including renewable energy solutions, rural development, health literacy, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation. The University also supports policy modelling and scenario planning, particularly in solar energy and environmental management, by offering data-based insights from its ongoing research and innovation projects.

Notable examples of collaborative policy engagement in 2023 include the University’s participation in the National Urban Planning Conclave 2023 (MoHUD, Government of India), where faculty contributed technical perspectives on sustainable infrastructure and urban mobility solutions (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities). Similarly, the University worked with the Society for Clean Environment (SOCLEEN) to advance discussions on sustainable transport policy and waste management frameworks in Gujarat, influencing regional adaptation strategies under SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action.

At the grassroots level, Parul University’s collaboration with Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) facilitates structured policy feedback loops between rural communities and government agencies. The University’s UBA cell routinely identifies local problems—such as sanitation gaps, drinking water shortages, and renewable energy access—and prepares detailed village-level development reports that are submitted to district and state authorities for policy action. These initiatives strengthen the evidence-based policymaking ecosystem by integrating academic insights, community data, and field-tested interventions.

Through flagship community projects like HUNF (Meals on Wheels) for hunger alleviation (SDG 2: Zero Hunger), Garima – Women Livelihood Program promoting economic inclusion (SDG 5: Gender Equality; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth), and environmental awareness initiatives on waste segregation and energy conservation (SDG 6 & SDG 13), the University provides continuous input to NGOs and local administrative bodies. These programs not only address community needs but also serve as pilot models for policy replication and scaling by partner agencies.

At the governance level, the University regularly hosts policymakers, ministers, and heads of government departments through forums such as the IIMUN Conclave, National Youth Parliament (Chhatra Sansad), and thematic summits on sustainability and innovation. These platforms foster policy dialogue and capacity building, enabling mutual learning between academia, government, and civil society. Through structured discussions, experts from Parul University contribute towards identifying emerging challenges, drafting actionable strategies, and evaluating the likely outcomes of interventions with and without specific policy measures.

To ensure transparency and accountability, Parul University follows a quarterly review system through which designated departments and cells monitor, evaluate, and report on the progress of its collaborative SDG-linked interventions. Data is systematically documented and shared through public reports, official websites, press releases, and social media channels, ensuring that evidence of these engagements remains accessible and verifiable.

In essence, Parul University’s relationships with regional NGOs and government stakeholders reflect a comprehensive ecosystem of policy participation, combining academic research, field implementation, and evaluative feedback. By engaging in joint problem identification, adaptive strategy design, and ongoing monitoring, the University ensures that its expertise contributes not only to community empowerment but also to shaping policies that drive sustainable and inclusive growth at the local, regional, and national levels.

In parallel, over 20 faculty members have advanced their expertise through Erasmus+ Staff Mobility programs, participating in joint workshops, collaborative data collection, and SDG policy dialogue sessions. These global experiences have strengthened the University’s capacity for data-driven research and sustainable innovation, while enabling both students and faculty to engage with cutting-edge international practices in sustainability measurement and impact analysis.

The University’s collaborative approach not only enhances academic excellence but also contributes to global SDG data ecosystems. By aligning its research, teaching, and data-sharing frameworks with international best practices, Parul University ensures that its contributions meaningfully support SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

These partnerships have also led to joint publications, comparative sustainability reports, and international workshops that strengthen the University’s contribution to SDG monitoring and evaluation. Through active engagement with global academic networks and the exchange of sustainability metrics, Parul University continues to foster cross-border data transparency, research innovation, and inclusive collaboration — all key drivers of progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

By participating in such international collaborations for SDG data gathering, Parul University not only enhances its global standing but also solidifies its role as a knowledge partner and contributor to the world’s sustainable future — proving that education, research, and data are the most powerful tools for transforming the world.

Collaboration for SDG best practice

Parul University has been utilising meaningful collaborations for implementing best practices related to the SDGs in academia. The university has enhanced their contribution to sustainable development by fostering interdisciplinary research, engaging with external partners, and involving communities.

The university has been driving meaningful change through four international research projects related to SDGs on Green Hydrogen, Green Refrigeration, Sustainable Smart Cities and reducing water consumption in collaboration with Advanced Technology Institute, University of Surrey, UK funded around INR 2.5 Crores by Royal Academy of Engineering, UK. The university also has been successfully completed international project such as the Capacity Building Centres as a sustainable solution to raise the standards of teaching staff in Indian HEIs (CABCIN) which is a European Union funded Initiative worth INR 84 Lakhs and the Global Grand Challenges Summit for UN SDGs sponsored by Royal Academy of Engineering, UK with funding worth INR 09 lakhs.

The university continuously hosts international experts from well reputed international institutions for Research Collaborations. Furthermore, embracing collaborative approaches has not only enriched the educational experience for students but also positioned the university as a leader in the global sustainability movement.

Personality Development across stakeholders of an institution is inevitable when the normal classroom becomes a global classroom. A classroom that offers sessions by International Professors along with National ones becomes a strong learning environment for the students from all backgrounds and capabilities. A culture that strongly affiliates to imbibe the best practices from across the world is possible only when Faculty members travel for education and come back to initiate positive actions. A student becomes a globally competent professional right after education when there is a global exposure opportunity during the academic tenure. Educating through Internationalisation prepares the youth towards more Globally Competent Skills thus making them more Employable in the current Global World (Global and Local). This happens at PARUL UNIVERSITY when we connect with more than 80 International Universities across the USA, UK, Europe, Russia, Asia and Canada. A dedicated department to handle Internationalisation and International student admissions help in ensuring that all possible opportunities and collaborations are explored and benefited by the students. Internationalization Initiatives Strongly believing this ideology of maximum global exposure for staff and students, Internationalisation has always been a constant focus at the University. Interacting with International students and faculties while experiencing the pedagogical practices along with the experiential cultural learning has been strongly deep rooted in the academic learning system thus making the later a wholesome experience.

The University sends more than 500 students every year abroad for various programs of Semester Exchange, Summer/winter schools or Further Education. With more than 35 International Summer Schools in place, students’ study across the globe earning academic credits and global exposure. The University has established Erasmus+ Mobility Partnership with European Universities, which allows students to study a semester abroad with full funding/scholarship. Our students have also reaped the prestigious Lithuanian National Scholarship for a full semester several times. The major highlight of such mobility programs is the credit transfer along with the cultural exposure. Industry embedded programs also are offered and one such program is with Skoda Auto University in the Czech Republic where students study the practical aspects of their subjects in Czech. Several online programs to provide students with Internships and Expert sessions are designed and nearly 300 students have taken advantage of such International Online Programs during challenging times of COVID’19. The University sends students for Masters and PhD research work also and partnership with Mainz University in Germany and UMons University in Belgium has provided such opportunity for one year for the University’s students. More than 100 students can participate in the semester exchange programs each semester from Parul University at partner Universities mostly with tuition fees waiver category and academic credit mapping benefits. Students have won various project competitions during such summer schools and some have gained internship opportunities. The University’s Indian Summer Schools hosted three times each year are also very popular among its partner Universities in Europe and Russia. The University has received program grants from DAAD to host students from Germany and more than 60 students have participated in bilateral exchange. Programs like Young Entrepreneur Research Project organised for Swiss Students is a curriculum-embedded program at Bern University of Applied Sciences. Students from Canada, Russia and Czech have participated in research-based projects during summer schools at the University.

Educating Teachers through International Exposure is one of the best workshops for understanding pedagogical practices for academics and research. The University’s students benefit when more than 100 teachers in a year take such experiential learning. Professors from the University take part in Erasmus+ Mobility and visit Partner International Universities for sessions and research. Nearly 10 Professors participate in such scholarship mobility every year. The University offers experiential learning to the international community through International Week (a 5-day intensive program of networking and learning) and Visiting Professor Program (which involves inviting International Professors for teaching our students for one semester), thus making the local students aware of global practices, and creating long lasting bonding. Receiving more than 20 Partner University representatives in a year makes it more valuable for the student community at the University. The University has also organised an International Conference in association with Partner University, WRUST, Poland thus enabling Professors and their research to come together on a common platform. International Professors from Partner Universities have also participated in Govt. conferences and events through Parul University thus contributing to the academia at larger than only Parul University. International Professors have taken sessions for Technical Subjects, Cuisines, Business, Entrepreneurship etc and students have taken benefits of such sessions.

Research has been a constant endeavour and it has enabled the University to be a part of CABCIN (a European Union funded 3-year Research Project with financial grant) and Royal Academy (A Funded Project partnership with Industry and UK Universities), which has brought in a lot of capacity building of staff members at the University. The University has hosted students from the USA for Medical Internships, Switzerland for Nursing and from Belgium for Research in the area of Education through our Partner Universities. Innovative areas and ventures like, Hackathon event with ITMOU, Russia, Social Innovation Projects with International Companies in USA and COIL Programs in Social Work and Design with Canadian International Partner Universities have been developed to ensure skill development among students. Research at the University through such International and collaborative learning is published every year in a book form. Proposals are also sent for various Research Joint Projects with different countries. Professors at the University have also recently applied for Post-Doctoral fellowships, which are funded for 2-year programs.

We not only commit to fulfil the dreams of students while they are studying at the University, but we also work with them to achieve their dreams to study further and specifically when they want to study abroad. Connecting them with Partner Institutions abroad in Canada, US, UK, Europe with scholarship benefits, for direct admissions, somewhere serves the University’s interest of having its alumni seek quality education abroad and also strengthens the collaboration between the Universities. At the University, there have been students who have done bachelors in Indian with PU and taken semester exchange opportunities at Partner University going on to do full time Masters with complete scholarship at the same University. Thus, the Internationalisation at the University provides students with a pathway to continue their studies abroad after completing their education at Parul University.

Study Abroad process support along with Language coaching is given to nearly 200 students every year for continuing their higher education abroad. Study Abroad Centre helps students to learn for clearing IELTS, Duo Lingo, French and German Language Examinations for their admission process. Nearly 400 students are enrolled in IELTS coaching. Pathway programs created help students with scholarship and language benefits to study abroad. Connecting with Alumni students settled abroad is also a part of the Study Abroad process, thus helping students with end-to-end process.

Nearly 80 students were sponsored for free education at Parul University by respective government bodies of countries like Gambia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe etc. The University has given tuition fees waiver to around 100 students from Nepal under Special Scholarship aid programs. International students arrive from across the world for their education at PARUL UNIVERSITY right from Africa, Asia, Mongolia, Russia, Germany, Bolivia and Fiji etc. International Admissions happen at all levels of education and PARUL UNIVERSITY has Govt. Sponsored Teachers for PhD programs.

It is very important for the University to be present in the global community as a member of Association of Common Wealth Universities and Eurashe, seeking opportunities at EURAXESS and DAAD and marking its presence at world summits like NAFSA, EAIE and APAIE etc. The University is also proud for its strengthened bonds with Embassies of Partner Countries. Major events of Internationalisation are graced by the presence of dignitaries from the Embassy Offices from USA, Europe and Canada. The International Relations Cell at PARUL UNIVERSITY, which is a central contact point for students to achieve their dream of Global Exposure, strives from 2013 to make students a globally competent citizen.

Sustainable Literacy

Parul University is deeply committed to fostering Sustainability Literacy among its students — ensuring that every graduate not only understands the principles of sustainable development but can also apply them in solving real-world challenges. Through its academic ecosystem, community outreach, and global partnerships, the University strives to create a generation of professionals who are conscious of environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

Integrating Sustainability into Learning

Parul University embeds the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its academic framework across disciplines such as engineering, pharmacy, architecture, medicine, management, and design. Each program is structured to include sustainability-oriented modules, case studies, and projects that develop students’ capacity to think critically about global challenges such as climate change, clean energy, waste management, and social equity.

Measuring Sustainability Literacy

To assess and enhance sustainability literacy, Parul University adopts a multi-dimensional evaluation framework that measures students’ awareness, understanding, and application of sustainability concepts.

  • Curricular Assessment: Students’ comprehension of sustainability is evaluated through coursework, project-based learning, and capstone projects aligned with SDG themes.
  • Surveys and Feedback Mechanisms: Periodic student surveys and focus group discussions help gauge how effectively sustainability concepts are understood and retained.
  • Outcome Mapping: Program learning outcomes (PLOs) are mapped with specific SDGs to monitor the progression of sustainability competencies throughout a student’s academic journey.

Experiential and Research-Based Learning

Students actively participate in live sustainability-driven research and field projects, including initiatives on Green Hydrogen, Smart Cities, Waste-to-Energy Conversion, and Water Conservation. Collaborations with institutions such as the University of Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute and the Royal Academy of Engineering offer exposure to cutting-edge global sustainability practices.

Community Engagement for Sustainable Impact

Through the National Service Scheme (NSS)National Cadet Corps (NCC), and community-driven initiatives like Apni Pathshala and Garima – Women Livelihood Project, students apply classroom learning to social transformation. These hands-on experiences nurture empathy, problem-solving, and civic responsibility—core competencies of sustainability literacy.

Global and Interdisciplinary Collaborations

With over 84 international university partnerships, Parul University provides opportunities for students to engage in sustainability research and exchange programs. These collaborations foster interdisciplinary learning, empowering students to address sustainability challenges from a global perspective.

Knowledge Dissemination and Academic Contribution

The University’s contribution to sustainability knowledge is reflected through over 1,800 publications and conference proceedings related to SDGs. Regular events such as the Parul University International Conference on Engineering and TechnologyAyurtech, and thematic Summer Schools emphasize renewable energy, clean technologies, and sustainable innovation.

Continuous Monitoring and Improvement

Parul University conducts annual SDG reviews and quarterly audits of its sustainability initiatives to evaluate performance, identify learning gaps, and improve sustainability literacy across academic and non-academic domains.

Through a comprehensive approach that integrates teaching, research, and community service, Parul University not only measures but continually enhances the sustainability literacy of its students. By equipping learners with the skills, values, and mindset necessary to drive sustainable transformation, the University reaffirms its commitment to building a responsible, resilient, and sustainable future.
