Shared Sports Facilities

The University promotes community engagement and holistic development through its Physical Education & Sports Department and Social Responsive Cell, which actively collaborate to make the campus sports infrastructure accessible to the wider community. Through this, the University fosters a spirit of inclusivity, teamwork, and social responsibility.

The University regularly organizes and hosts various inter-school and inter-college tournaments, sports meets, and fitness events, allowing external participants to utilize its well-equipped sports facilities by sharing its grounds, courts, and indoor arenas with schools, colleges, and local organizations.

Physical Education & Sports

The Department of Physical Education & Sports at Parul University stands as a dynamic force in operationalizing the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by strategically opening its world-class sports infrastructure to the wider community. Transcending its primary role of fostering holistic student development, the department has established itself as a regional hub for physical activity by actively sharing its facilities with local schools, athletes, and the general public. This commitment is realized through powerful collaborations with key governmental and sports bodies, including the Sports Authority of Gujarat, the Association of Indian Universities, and various national federations for sports like football and cricket. These partnerships are the cornerstone of its outreach, enabling the hosting of numerous state and national-level events on campus.

The department’s extensive facilities—including the FIFA-standard football ground at the Milkha-Messi Sports Complex, international cricket grounds, and the multi-sport Dhyanchand Complex—serve as a shared resource that promotes health and well-being beyond the university gates. By hosting events such as open cricket tournaments, the Khel Mahakumbh 2.0, and district-level football championships, the department provides invaluable platforms for community participation in diverse disciplines, from football, cricket, and yoga to kabaddi, kho-kho, and basketball. This initiative directly advances SDG 3 by encouraging widespread physical fitness, nurturing sportsmanship, and fostering an inclusive culture of healthy living across all age groups. Simultaneously, its model of operation is a testament to SDG 17, demonstrating how strategic alliances between an educational institution and public authorities can amplify impact, optimize resource utilization, and build a healthier, more active society. In essence, the department’s policy of shared facilities exemplifies a sustainable and collaborative approach to community wellness, turning university assets into a public good for the collective benefit of the Vadodara region.

Social Responsive Cell

The Social Responsive Cell (SRC) at Parul University stands as a cornerstone of the institution's commitment to societal welfare, strategically aligning its mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A prime example of this commitment in action is the "Bal Milan" program, a large-scale initiative that exemplifies a successful collaboration, particularly with the National Service Scheme (NSS), to open the university's extensive sports infrastructure to the wider community. This partnership directly advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), leveraging institutional resources for collective impact. The core of the Bal Milan program was to provide a platform for children from 25 rural schools in the Waghodia block to participate in sports and cultural activities on the university campus. The NSS played a pivotal role in this endeavor by sponsoring food and medals for the winners, a crucial contribution that ensured the event's success and inclusivity.

This initiative powerfully addresses SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by actively promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle among young children. Through organized competitions like running races, lemon-and-spoon races, and musical chairs, the program encouraged active participation and highlighted the importance of fitness from a young age. Concurrently, it strongly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing experiential learning beyond the classroom, fostering skills such as teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Furthermore, the program’s design and execution championed SDG 5 (Gender Equality), as evidenced by the detailed participation records showing equal and active involvement of both boys and girls in every sporting and cultural event. By creating an inclusive and empowering environment, the SRC and NSS collaboration ensured that the university's facilities served as a catalyst for holistic development. In conclusion, the shared use of sports facilities through the Bal Milan program is a testament to a sustainable, multi-stakeholder model that effectively translates the university's resources into tangible community benefits, fostering health, education, and equality through powerful partnerships.

“YourDOST” – An access to unlimited counselling sessions

Parul University has consistently prioritized the mental health and overall well-being of its students. Recognizing the increasing demands and challenges faced by students, the university has partnered with “YourDOST”, an innovative online platform that provides accessible mental health and wellness support. This collaboration represents the university’s commitment to providing a supportive academic environment where students can thrive not just academically but also emotionally.

YourDOST provides the students with 24/7 access to certified counsellors, psychologists, and career mentors who help address a wide range of issues, including academic stress, anxiety, career dilemmas, and personal concerns.

One of the main advantages of this partnership is the significant reduction in stress-related issues on campus. By making mental health resources readily available, Parul University ensures that students have an effective outlet to manage their stress and develop resilience in handling academic and personal challenges. This proactive approach contributes to a healthier campus environment, as students who feel emotionally supported are likely to perform better academically and engage more meaningfully in university life.

YourDOST also plays an essential role in providing monthly reports to the university administration, offering insights into the usage patterns, common stressors, and issues faced by the students. These reports are sent as regular email updates, enabling the university to identify trends and areas where additional support may be needed. This data-driven feedback mechanism allows the university to better understand the mental health needs of its students and implement targeted interventions when necessary. Additionally, the reports assist in measuring the overall impact of the mental health initiatives on campus, reinforcing the value of this partnership.

Through its collaboration with YourDOST, the university demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to balancing academic pressures with mental well-being. This partnership underscores the university's dedication to fostering a supportive learning environment where students are empowered to pursue their academic and personal goals with confidence and resilience.

Activities under YourDOST

The event “Find Your Personality Type” took place to support the current Mental Health Campaigns located at the university. Participants were given the opportunity to take fun personality assessments, including the Myers-Briggs-Type Indicator (MBTI) and Big Five Personality Assessment, which would act as tools to self-explore their core traits and preferences.

2. Find Your Attachment Style

An interactive self-assessment session called "Find Your Attachment Style" was organized on campus by INSIGHT Centre in collaboration with YourDOST. In order to determine their individual attachment styles, secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized, participants were asked to fill out an insightful questionnaire.

Total Health Solutions (THS)

In 2023, Parul University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Total Health Solutions (THS), the brand name of Docsymedsy Healthtech Private Limited, to provide students with convenient, confidential, and reliable access to essential medications. This collaboration between THS and Parul Sevashram Pharmacy aims to address the health and wellness needs of students by digitally integrating their systems for seamless ordering and delivery of medications, including those for mental health support. Each month, the university receives detailed reports on student usage of these services, allowing it to better understand and respond to student health needs.

The partnership primarily benefits students who require medications for managing mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. THS provides a platform where students can place orders for these medications, and once an order is generated, Parul Sevashram Pharmacy fulfils and delivers it directly to students. This easy access to prescribed medications ensures that students can maintain their treatment regimens without the challenges of finding a pharmacy or experiencing delays. Such convenience is crucial, especially during exam periods or stressful academic phases, as it alleviates the burden on students managing complex health conditions.

Confidentiality and privacy are essential factors in the success of this collaboration. Many students hesitate to seek mental health support due to concerns about stigma or privacy. By providing a digital, confidential platform, THS encourages students to access the medications they need without fear of judgment. This is especially valuable for mental health treatments, where privacy can significantly impact a student’s willingness to seek and maintain support. Furthermore, this collaboration enhances the university’s approach to student wellness. Monthly reports from THS provide data on medication usage, allowing the university to gauge the demand for mental health support and recognize patterns in student health needs. With this information, Parul University can tailor its mental health initiatives, allocate resources effectively, and even introduce new programs to support student well-being.

In conclusion, Parul University’s partnership with THS demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to student health. By providing reliable access to medications and maintaining confidentiality, the university actively supports students’ mental well-being. This comprehensive, data-informed approach not only helps students manage their health needs but also strengthens the campus environment, promoting a culture of well-being and resilience.

Mentor-Mentee Program in Practice

Mentoring a student can be a rewarding and impactful experience. As a mentor, our role is to guide and support the students in their personal and professional development. Here are some key points to consider when mentoring a student:

  • Establish a Relationship: Build a rapport with the student based on trust, respect, and open communication. Take the time to understand their goals, interests, and challenges.
  • Set Clear Expectations: Define the objectives and scope of the mentoring relationship. Discuss what the student hopes to achieve and what you can offer as a mentor. Agree on the frequency and format of your meetings or interactions.
  • Provide Guidance and Support: Help the student identify their strengths and areas for growth. Offer guidance on developing relevant skills, setting goals, and making informed decisions. Share your knowledge and experiences, but also encourage independent thinking and problem-solving.
  • Offer Feedback: Regularly provide constructive feedback to help the student improve their performance and gain self-awareness. Be specific in your observations and offer suggestions for improvement. Balance praise with areas for development to maintain a balanced perspective.
  • Encourage Reflection and Self-Assessment: Prompt the student to reflect on their experiences, strengths, and areas for improvement. Encourage them to set goals and develop action plans to achieve those goals. Help them analyze their progress and adjust their strategies as needed.
  • Expand Networks: Introduce the student to your professional network and encourage them to seek out additional mentors or contacts in their field of interest. Networking can provide valuable opportunities for career development and learning.
  • Foster Independence: Gradually empower the student to take ownership of their learning and decision-making process. Encourage them to seek solutions independently and take initiative in pursuing their goals.
  • Be Available and Responsive: Make yourself available to the student for questions, guidance, and support. Respond to their inquiries or concerns in a timely manner to demonstrate your commitment to their development.
  • Maintain Confidentiality: Respect the student's privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding any personal or sensitive information they share with you.
  • Evaluate and Adjust: Regularly evaluate the mentoring relationship and its effectiveness. Seek feedback from the student on how they perceive the mentoring process and if any adjustments are needed.

Remember, every student is unique, so tailor your mentoring approach to their specific needs and aspirations. By offering guidance, support, and encouragement, we can make a positive impact on their educational and personal journey.

Other Wellness and Recreational Support Initiatives

At Parul University, we recognize that mental health is paramount to the well-being and productivity of our staff, both teaching and non-teaching. To foster a supportive and enriching environment, we have implemented a comprehensive array of mental health support initiatives that cater to the diverse needs of our workforce.

Flexible Leave Options: We understand that personal and health-related issues can arise unexpectedly. Therefore, our flexible leave policy offers a variety of leave types, including sick, maternity, paternity, and casual leave. This flexibility allows staff to prioritize their health and well-being without added stress. Furthermore, additional time off is provided for medical and paramedical staff, emphasizing our commitment to work-life balance and self-care.

Public Holidays Calendar: To facilitate better planning for rest and relaxation, we announce a comprehensive public holidays calendar at the beginning of each year. This transparency enables staff to anticipate their time off, essential for maintaining mental health and ensuring adequate recovery time.

Fitness and Holistic Health: Recognizing the strong link between physical activity and mental well-being, we provide access to a fitness center staffed with expert trainers and physiotherapists at concessional rates. Our holistic health initiatives include regular yoga sessions, medical check-ups, and sports events, all designed to foster relaxation and encourage healthy habits. These activities significantly enhance emotional resilience and contribute to overall mental health.

Subsidized Healthcare Services and Arogya Card Benefits: Access to quality healthcare is paramount for mental and physical well-being. Our university offers subsidized healthcare services through our teaching hospitals and provides staff with exclusive health benefits via the Arogya card. This initiative alleviates financial concerns related to healthcare, allowing staff to focus on their well-being.

Medical Check-ups and Support for Serious Health Issues: To ensure timely medical intervention for serious health challenges, we conduct regular medical check-ups and offer financial assistance for major treatments such as bypass surgery or cancer care. This proactive approach not only reduces stress but also provides essential emotional support during difficult times.

Recreational Activities: Social well-being is a priority at our university. We provide various facilities, including cafeterias and lunch provisions, and organize community events, cultural activities, and sports games to foster a sense of community among staff. Additionally, our Staff and Students Welfare Cell (formally known as Visiting Parents Cell) organize recreational tours to local attractions and resorts, promoting relaxation and social engagement at no cost to staff.

These initiatives not only support professional growth but also reduce anxiety related to career stagnation, fostering a sense of accomplishment and better mental well-being.

This commitment boosts self-confidence and motivation, significantly contributing to emotional well-being.

Faculty Development Programs and Webinars: To enhance teaching efficiency and alleviate work-related stress, we conduct faculty development programs and webinars. These initiatives provide the latest tools for effective teaching and facilitate peer networking, nurturing vital emotional support systems among faculty members.

Advance Salaries and Economic Welfare Policies: In recognition of the financial challenges that may arise, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, we offer advance salaries and implement economic welfare policies such as no salary deductions, paid leave for quarantined staff, and maintaining gratuity and provident funds. These measures foster economic security, reduce financial stress, and promote mental peace.

Incentives for Professional Achievements: To acknowledge and reward excellence, we provide incentives for faculty research, publications, and participation in national and international conferences. This recognition fosters a sense of purpose and reinforces self-worth, enhancing job satisfaction and contributing to long-term mental well-being.

Education Support and Fee Concessions: Encouraging lifelong learning is a core value at our university. We offer fee concessions and scholarships for Ph.D. and higher studies, alongside sponsorships for staff attending conferences and workshops. This support alleviates financial pressure, promotes personal growth, and enhances self-esteem, ultimately contributing to mental well-being.

Seed Funding, Incentives, and Revenue Sharing for Research: Our commitment to research and professional development is evident through initiatives like seed funding for projects, incentives for publications, and sharing 1% of extramural research funds with investigators. These measures foster intellectual fulfilment, reduce professional stress, and motivate faculty through recognition and financial rewards.

Academic Review and Cash Rewards: To further support academic and professional growth, we conduct regular academic reviews to recognize and reward the top-performing teachers with cash prizes. This recognition enhances self-worth, promotes emotional well-being, and fosters a sense of accomplishment and motivation among our staff. Through these comprehensive initiatives, including our dedicated Center for Counselling & Psychological Wellbeing, named as “INSIGHT”, Parul University strives to create a supportive environment that prioritizes the mental health and well-being of all staff members.
